Two P.R. students receive Ev Clay/PRSA Miami Chapter Scholarships

School of Communication seniors Monica Zgurova and Morgan Chicchelly have been awarded $1,750 scholarships by the Ev Clay/PRSA Miami Chapter Endowment Fund.The scholarships were established in 1985 in memory of Miami public relations pioneer Everett A. Clay. Film Students Experience Hollywood At Annual Canes Film Showcase

“The thrill of a lifetime” — that’s how Noah DeBonis described seeing his short film, Posthumous, screened last week at the Paramount Theatre in Hollywood, California at the 17th Annual Canes Film Showcase. Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Students, Alumnus, Faculty and Staff

The School of Communication honored its outstanding students, alumni, faculty and staff on May 9 at its Annual Awards Ceremony. Dean Gregory Shepherd presented the awards amid family, friends, faculty and staff at a reception at the Student Activities Center. Catie Staszak, who graduated in broadcast journalism and spoke at the School's commencement ceremony, received the School's Outstanding Senior Award. Communication Studies students were honored on May 1 for their achievements throughout the year.  Brenda Fernandez was recognized as The Communication Studies Outstanding Senior Award, and the Frazier White Outstanding Communication Studies Student award was received by Krystal Acosta. Student Achievement Honored at Annual Student Showcase, PRADDYs

School of Communication students were awarded for their outstanding work this academic year on Monday night at the 65th Annual Student Showcase and the PRADDYs. The Showcase also honored alumna Lissette Gonzalez, meteorologist for WFOR, CBS4 in Miami, as the SoC Communicator of the Year. Gonzalez graduated UM with a double major in broadcast journalism and vocal performance. She went on to obtain an additional degree as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from Mississippi State University with honors. UM Advances to Finals in National Student Advertising Competition

The student team from the School of Communication successfully competed in the semi-final round and now will proceed to the final round of the National Student Advertising Competition in Boca Raton on May 29. The semi-finals consisted of 18 district-winning teams, each of whom completed a 15-minute Q&A with four judges via conference call. Only eight of 18 teams advanced to the final round, and more than 130 college and university teams entered the competition. 17th Annual Canes Film Festival Will Highlight Student Work In Motion Pictures

The best student work in the Motion Pictures program will be in the spotlight May 2-4 at 17th Annual Canes Film Festival at the Cosford Cinema. The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. on April 28 with a screening of McConkey, a documentary presented by RedBull, followed by a Q&A with director David Zieff after the film.  Almost 100 student films and scripts will compete from May 2 to 4 for festival awards granted by influential judges in the entertainment industry. Annual Student Showcase to Honor Student Media and Alumna

The Department of Journalism and Media Management will host the 65th Annual Student Showcase from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday April 28 to honor outstanding contributions in student media. Students from UMTV, The Miami Hurricane, Distraction Magazine and the Ibis Yearbook will be recognized for their achievements throughout the year. SoC Team Wins National Student Advertising Competition in District Four

The student team from the School of Communication won the National Student Advertising Competition District Four Championship on April 5 in Orlando and will move on to the semi-final round later this month.
