About the Program
Continuing Education for Media Professionals
The Department of Journalism and Media Management (JMM) offers a 12-credit nondegree part-time Graduate Certificate in Media Management (GCMM) for professionals who seek to supplement their education with specialized media courses and to enhance their skills.
Curriculum
The curriculum of the certificate consists of JMM 632 Current Issues in Media Management (3 credits), JMM 636 Content Strategy in the Media Industry (3 credits), and two additional courses (6 credits) from the following list of electives offered during the day or evening.
- JMM 634 Media Distribution for Film and Television
- JMM 643 Media Industry Trends
- JMM 657 Media Entrepreneurship
- JMM 659 Web and Media Analytics
- JMM 663 Applied Data Analytics for Journalism and Media Management
This certificate can be completed within a year by taking JMM 632 and the first elective during the fall semester and then JMM 636 and the second elective during the spring semester. Students can start the program either in the Fall or in the Spring. They may take one or more courses for credit, but must satisfactorily complete all four courses to receive the certificate. All four completed courses with grades of B or better may also apply toward the Master of Science program in Media Management for admitted students.

Showcase Your Talents
The Media Management Association (MMA) offers students opportunities to network with local industry professionals at monthly meetings and run for office in early fall. The MMA Awards competition is held in late spring to recognize the outstanding work of students in the area of media management. Every semester, Orange Umbrella, the media consultancy housed in the University of Miami’s School of Communication, invites students to apply for various positions, including account managers, and work on real-life projects for clients. Students in Media Management can also join the executive boards of UMTV and WVUM, the University of Miami’s award-winning cable channel and FM radio station, respectively.
