Faculty advisor: Sarai Nunez

  • Affiliated with the American Advertising Federation.

  • Introduces students to the world of advertising through guest speakers and field trips to advertising agencies, the media, and suppliers in South Florida.

  • Members attend various functions held by the local professional club, the Advertising Federation of Greater Miami, and can volunteer their time at the January judging of the ADDY creative awards.

Alpha Delta Sigma

Faculty advisor: Meryl Blau

  • Alpha Delta Sigma is the American Advertising Federation’s national honorary society that recognizes outstanding academic achievements by college seniors majoring in advertising across the country.

  • To be nominated, a student must be a senior and a member of the UM AAF chapter and have a minimum GPA of 3.25 in all advertising studies and all other courses.

Dean’s Student Circle Peer Mentor Program

Faculty advisor: Luis Herrera

  • The Dean’s Student Circle group functions as a liaison between students and the administration regarding the dissemination of information and events and serves as Peer Mentors to incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Delta Kappa Alpha

  • National, co-educational, professional cinema fraternity for cinematic arts students of character.

  • Open to all both undergraduate and graduate students of all majors.

  • Over 75 years of history and alumni, members are connected to the top cinema students from universities across the nation.

  • Purpose is to bring cohesion among communication students dedicated to truth and excellence in all communication professions, as well as provide a venue for professional enrichment in future communication endeavors.

Media Management Association

  • MMA is open to all students and majors interested in media management careers. There are no dues.

  • MMA hosts monthly meetings with industry professionals to learn about the media industry and facilitate networking.

  • MMA holds elections every fall for MMA offices.

  • MMA holds a competition every spring to recognize outstanding undergraduate works in the area of media management.

NBS-AERho

  • UM chapter of the National Broadcasting Society.

  • NBS membership is open to any student at the University of Miami with an interest in broadcasting or electronic media.

  • Alpha Epsilon Rho is the broadcasting honor society within the National Broadcasting Society. Membership is gained by students who distinguish themselves through grade point average and extra-curricular work over several semesters of college.

  • NBS-AERho sponsors an annual awards banquet and ceremony to honor outstanding students in all aspects of broadcast activity.

Society for News Design

  • UM chapter of the Society for News Design.

  • The goal of the chapter is to increase interest in newspaper and magazine design on campus.

Society of Professional Journalists

Faculty advisor: Joe Treaster

  • A student-based branch of the national organization based in Indianapolis seeks to enhance the general professionalism of journalists.

  • Fosters ethical and professional conduct among student journalists on the UM campus through a program of monthly meetings, seminars, guest speakers and panels, and regular attendance at regional and national SPJ conventions for both student and working journalists.

  • Members are interested in a broadcast journalism, print journalism, or photo journalism career.
