UM Debaters Earn Top Tournament Honors

David Silverman and Spencer George are the 2014 Junior Varsity Southeast Debate Champions.  Debating at Emory University on February 21 to23, Spencer and David compiled a perfect 6-0  record, advancing into finals where they won a 3-0 decision to defeat ACC rivals Wake Forest and claim the championship.  Also competing and contributing to the UM success were Joe Karam and Russ Wilde, Adrianne Babun-Chavaria and Anna Shah, and Nabiha Aziz and Anna Ivanova.  On February 15, UM Debate also defeated local rivals to win the championship of the Miami Dade [...]

Professor’s documentary, Buscando a Gastón, to premiere in Lima, Peru

Buscando a Gastón, a documentary co-produced by Professor Ed Talavera, the chair of the cinema and interactive media department, will premiere in Lima on March 19 and then open in 20 theaters around Peru. Talavera also served as director of photography on the project. Buscando a Gastón follows internationally renowned Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio to discover the stories, inspiration and dreams behind a man who has taken his cuisine outside the kitchen on a mission to change his country. Call for Entries: Wine Spectator Foundation Competition To Award Up To $50,000 For Student Projects

The Wine Spectator Foundation will award up to $50,000 to School of Communication undergraduate and graduate students for projects about wine, food, restaurants, travel or tourism. The S.L. Harrison Memorial Scholarship Fund has been formed to honor Professor Stanley “Stan” L. American Debate Association National Championships, Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia, 3/14-16On Sunday March 16th, the UM Novice Debate Team of Barbara Puodzius and Anna Ivanova advanced to the final round of the American Debate Association National Championships tournament hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Assistant Professor Clay Ewing, of the Department of Cinema and Interactive Media, recently returned from CERN, the birthplace of the world wide web and the Higgs Boson, after participating in TribecaHacks Story Matter, a 5 day hackathon for interactive storytelling about science. Each hackathon team was made up of a storyteller, scientist, blackbox, designer, and technologist.
