
The National Geographic Society is offering an exciting opportunity to join our Executive Communications team as an intern. In this role, you’ll help craft compelling narratives for the Office of the CEO and contribute to advancing the Society’s mission to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world.
You’ll gain hands-on experience crafting a diverse range of content and communications for both internal and external platforms, including talking points, newsletters, social media posts, presentations, and more. You’ll also support background research that informs the Society’s key messages and enhances the CEO’s engagement across a variety of audiences.
We’re looking for a motivated, curious and organized intern who loves to write, thrives in a collaborative environment and wants to explore the intersection of storytelling and strategy.
Four Principal Learning Responsibilities:
- Hone your writing skills by creating communications materials that reflect an executive’s unique style, tone and “voice.” In addition, you’ll learn how to tailor content to match the organization’s priorities and National Geographic’s legacy of excellence in storytelling. (30%)
- Strengthen your key communications skills by participating in brainstorming ideas, conducting research and helping create content for various internal and external platforms, including social media, staff newsletters and public presentations. (30%)
- Learn about the world of nonprofit communications by supporting Executive Communications and Strategic Communications messaging, strategic planning and event coordination in support of a wide array of disciplines. (25%)
- Gain hands-on experience in strategic visibility planning by identifying and researching high-impact speaking opportunities and events for our CEO. (15%)
Related Field of Study Required
Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations or a related field preferred. Students will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently as needed
- Strong research skills, with experience gathering and distilling content from various sources to support communications projects
- Ability to properly handle confidential and sensitive information
- Proficiency with Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs and Sheets)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Keynote
- Knowledge of AP Style preferred
- Positive attitude with proactive approach
- Ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines

Work Designation
Our internships are US based. The 2025 program will be mostly remote. Students will be invited to our DC headquarters one week in June to attend one of our signature events.
Salary Information
The pay rates for this internship are as follows:
- $18.55 (undergraduate)
- $22.00 (graduate)
