School of Communication Receives $1 Million Gift for Student Scholarships

University of Miami alumnus Robert Mann, the UM School of Communication Visiting Committee chair and a member of the University's Board of Trustees, has made a $1 million planned gift to a School of Communication scholarship fund. Mann, B.A.’70, has designated his donation to the Samuel and Grace Mann Endowed Scholarship Fund named after his parents. The fund supports scholarships for deserving undergraduate students majoring in broadcast journalism each year. University of Miami Radio Station WVUM 90.5 FM Increases Power to Reach More Listeners

Music lovers in all of Miami-Dade County can now listen to WVUM 90.5 FM, the University of Miami’s campus radio station, because of a newly installed transmitter and antenna.  The award-winning student-run radio station will reach 1.5 million more people with this upgrade. WVUM’s last transmitter upgrade was in 1998 and enabled its signal to be broadcast throughout Coral Gables and the surrounding areas. School Mourns the Loss of Jack Metzger, WVUM’s First Faculty Adviser

Former University of Miami faculty member and alumnus Jack Metzger, who taught communication courses for 14 years, passed away from cancer and heart disease earlier this year.  Metzger was 81. A host of children’s programs on local TV, Metzger, A.B. ‘53, taught radio production classes, including script writing and radio performance at UM, during the late 1950s’ through the 1960s’. He was a graduate of UM’s Radio Television and Film Department. In 1968, he became the first faculty adviser of WVUM 90.5 FM “The Voice,” the University’s campus radio station. [...]

Global Film on Aging to Have U.S. Premiere at Cosford

Students Return from Greece with a Film and a Lot of Experience

MFA Student Explores History of Film in Santander, Colombia

Before enrolling in the MFA film program at the School of Communication a year ago, Luis Jose Galvis Diaz studied journalism in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and worked as a television producer, a radio commentator and a film critic. Less than 10 years after graduating from the film program, Kyle Patrick Alvarez made his debut at the Sundance Film Festival last January with C.O.G., a movie he wrote, produced and directed.The film, based on a piece from David Sedaris’ essay collection, Naked, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the category of drama.
