An evaluation of the "cord-cutting" phenomenon, a viability study of virtual reality in sports and video entertainment, and an international analysis of over-the-top video services were the topics of the three winning entries of this year's Media Management Association (MMA) Awards. Cross Country ’Cane

California native Liat Cohen found her Miami experience to be collaborative and inspiring. On April 10, the Media Management Association hosted Heidi Lieb, senior director of business development at WPBT, to talk about the mechanism and strategies used to sell public television underwriting messages. She came to the South Florida noncommercial television station with considerable sales experience in the private sector, including a three-year stint as an account executive at ESPN. On March 6, the Media Management Association (MMA) welcomed Devin Rogan, associate director at the University of Miami Toppel Career Center, to discuss personal LinkedIn branding strategy. Staying Up All Night for a Good Cause

On Feb. 23, I volunteered to stay up all night to help a local nonprofit during the ninth annual PhilADthropy, where students like me create campaigns and other communication pieces in 25 hours.  The event kicked off at 11 a.m. at the University of Miami School of Communication’s courtyard with speeches by assistant professor of practice in the Department of Strategic Communication and PhilADthropy founder, Meryl Blau, and dean of the School of Communication, Dr. Gregory J. The Media Management Association welcomed its first guest speaker of the year, Paul Vignau, the director of sales at Comcast Spotlight who was accompanied by Henry Ortiz, an associate account executive and University of Miami (UM) alumnus. Spotlight is Comcast's advertising sales division where Vignau and his team monetize viewer impressions.  According to Vignau, video is the most powerful medium and is, therefore, essential to developing an emotional connection with customers. Society of Professional Journalists Focuses on Jobs and Internships

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is the oldest organization representing journalists in the United States. Joseph B. Treaster, professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Management, has recently revamped the University of Miami’s chapter of SPJ and is the group's adviser. “The Society of Professional Journalists at the University of Miami is focused on getting jobs and internships for its members,” Treaster said.
