SoC Professors’ Film Makes it to the Big Screen

Dillard High School in Broward County is home to one of the country’s most successful high school jazz bands. Sweet Dillard is a documentary that follows the Dillard High School Jazz Ensemble through its struggles and triumphs during the 2014 academic year. The film, which is almost two years in the making, will premiere on March 6 during the Miami International Film Festival. MMA Meeting: Student Opportunities at eMerge Americas

On Feb. 3, 2016, David Añón spoke to members of the Media Management Association to explain how an upcoming Miami-based technology conference could benefit students interested in startups and innovations. Añón is vice president of marketing for eMerge Americas, a conference held at the Miami Beach Convention Center since 2014. eMerge Americas promotes the advancement of technology and acts as a launch-pad for innovations and ideas. University of Miami students and local community join together for PhilADthropy 2016

This past weekend marked the seventh annual PhilADthropy at University of Miami School of Communication. The 25-hour event consisted of 13 student teams creating advertising, marketing, branding, design, and public relations materials for local nonprofit organizations. PhilADthropy and AD Group organizers selected the organizations from more than 100 entries and also reached out to alumni and industry professionals to volunteer their time and talents. NATPE Internship: Insights from Two SoC Students

Every year, the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) offers a competitive internship program that allows selected students to attend the conference and develop a greater knowledge of the television buying and distribution processes. Since 2011, the annual NATPE conference has been held in Miami Beach. University of Miami graduate Gretchen Schroeder, B.S.C. in Motion Pictures ’15, accepted a position as an American Cinema Editors Intern. Only two recent college graduates with experience in, and a passion for, film editing are chosen nation-wide to be a part of this four-week program each year. University of Miami School of Communication alumni The Meza Brothers, a.k.a. Andres Meza-Valdes, B.S.C. ’09, and Diego Meza-Valdes, B.S.C. ’09, are headed to the 2016 Sundance Film Festival to showcase Boniato, their 23-minute short horror film featuring migrant workers on a boniato (sweet potato) farm who cross borders into a supernatural world, a metaphor for the murky underground network into which many undocumented workers fall. CSPA Recognizes Ibis Yearbook as a Crown Finalist

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) named University of Miami’s 2015 Ibis yearbook a Crown Finalist. Edited by School of Communication graduate Holly Bensur, ‘15 B.S.C, the Ibis is one of four college yearbooks that will receive a Crown in March at the College Media Association (CMA) conference in New York City. All Crown finalists are winners, with some publications receiving Gold Crowns and others Silver Crowns. University of Miami Student Publications Garner Top Awards from The Associate Collegiate Press

Austin, Texas, a city known for keeping it hip, welcomed the nation’s leading college media outlets to the annual ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in November. University of Miami’s yearbook, Ibis, magazine, Distraction, and newspaper, The Miami Hurricane, received awards at this year’s convention. The 2014 Ibis yearbook won a Pinnacle College Media Award for College Yearbook of the Year for 2015 from the College Media Association (CMA) and their ninth Pacemaker from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP).
