Why study PR?
By: Alexia Karvelas
Why study PR? A question I would have never thought of until a few recent events that made me realize that this is a field that I truly want to further my studies in and potentially also pursue a career in.
I originally began my college career at the University of Miami as a criminology major, with a focus on a pre-law track. As part of my pre-law course and subjects, I decided to take a STC 201 Public Relations Strategy Development as I had an interest in applying this in my legal studies and career – given the value this has in all business environments. Little did I know that I would completely “fall in love” with the course and realized that this is where my passion lies. The course opened my eyes to an entirely new world, a way of thinking and approaching life. PR also blended my love for design and social interactions and with this combination, I decided to switch majors, which meant transferring to the School of Communication.
This transition now aligns with my interests and supports my career goals, that is, imagining a future centered around creating impactful and engaging communications.
Since joining the School of Communication at the University of Miami, I have been exposed to numerous opportunities that enhance my experience in the field. Through participating in PRSSA, taking Mastermind of the Taylor Swift Brand and interning within the School of Communication this semester, I have gained invaluable insights into the profession. In the future with this internship I will have the opportunity to interview people and pitch stories for these interviews.
This semester I was able to join PRSSA, the Public Relations Student Society of America, is an organization for PR students that offers networking, career resources, skill development and helps build connections, gain experience, and prepare for a career in PR. In my Social Media Messaging and Strategies class, I have also learned how to use Stukent and have had multiple assignments on this platform. Stukent has provided me with hands-on experience through simulated campaigns and real world case studies. Its resources and tools help me develop critical skills in media relations, strategic communication, and analytics. Along with this software I now have an understanding of how Asana works, and becoming comfortable with shorthand. Asana is a project management and team collaboration tool designed to help organizations manage tasks, projects, and workflows. Asana helps my internship team stay organized, improve productivity and ensure that everyone is on the same page by being able to see each other’s work.
Additionally, I have also had the privilege of learning from exceptional professors like Erika Mayor, lecturer in Strategic Communication and Founder and President of GrupoMayor Consulting Inc who, with her expertise as a digital marketing and PR consultant, provides relevant and practical knowledge both inside and outside the classroom. Outside of the classroom, she helps us with strengthening our resumes and updating our linkedin profile. Although I do not personally know every single person in the School of Communication, it feels as though I do, given the constant support of my classmates and professors. I am able to turn to anyone if I need help. In all my classes, we have group chats with classmates where we discuss topics that range from classwork to something as simple as how we are all doing. All my professors are fully engaged with their students – both in and out of the class.
The benefits of studying public relations include helping you understand and develop strategies and techniques to shape and manage a company’s image and communication with the public. PR skills are vital for influencing perception and ensuring a brand or organization communicates effectively. Although this is not where I thought I’d end up, I am excited for my career ahead in the School of Communication and all the opportunities in the future.
