Middle- and High-School Students Train at Hurricane Debate Institute

More than 40 middle- and high-school students from about a dozen Miami-Dade schools trained and competed in the 23rd annual Hurricane Debate Institute at the School of Communication over three week-long sessions in June and July. Students learned speech and argument skills, public forum, policy debate, student congress debate and Lincoln-Douglas debate.  The camp is highly interactive, featuring brief lectures, drills and debates, and written feedback to help them track their skills, said Leandra Lopez, co-director of the program. Christina Cyprien’s Photo Essay on a Military Mom

This spring, Christina Cyprien, a student in professor of practice Maggie Steber's photojournalism course, documented the life of Ashlee Etienne, a military mom. The photo essay captures touching moments of the daily struggles and triumphs of a military family. University of Miami Wins National Student Advertising District 4 Competition

For the third year in a row, the University of Miami School of Communication’s National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) team – the Miami Collective -- won first place at this year’s American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising District Competition.  The UM team now heads to Phoenix, Ariz., June 5-8, to compete nationally against 18 other district-winning schools. Miami Marlins Community Foundation Supports SoC Student Scholarships

Thanks to the  Miami Marlins Community Foundation, more talented students will be able to attend the School of Communication. The Foundation recently presented the school with a $5,000 check for the Suzanne Rayson Scholarship Fund for student scholarships during UM Family Weekend with the Miami Marlins, April 27-29, 2013. The Suzanne Rayson Scholarship Fund benefits students studying Broadcast Journalism who have shown an interest in sports broadcasting. Broadcast Journalism Major Selected for Pulitzer Center Fellowship

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting has selected Nicholas Swyter, a sophomore majoring in Broadcast Journalism and International Studies, for an international reporting fellowship in Panama this summer. Swyter, 20, a Panamanian citizen, will report on the construction of a major dam in that country and how the project is affecting indigenous tribes in the region. SoC Professor & Graduate Student Producing New Study on HIV/AIDS Prevention in Guatemala

Communication Studies Associate Professor Victoria Orrego Dunleavy& Ph.D. candidate Jasmine Phillips are on a mission this summer to improve the health of people in Guatemala. The School of Communication professor and graduate student are producing a new study about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention targeting young adults (18-25 years) in the Tz'utujil Mayan community of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala.
