Journalism Professor Joseph Treaster Awarded Scripps Howard Foundation/AEJMC Social Media Grant

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) has selected University of Miami School of Communication journalism professor Joseph B. Treaster as a recipient of a 2013-14 Scripps Howard Foundation/AEJMC Social Media Externship Grant. The grant supports the opportunity for journalism faculty to spend two weeks this summer learning first-hand how newspapers and broadcast stations use social media across multiple platforms.  Professors will then take this knowledge into their classrooms during the fall and winter/spring semesters. School of Communication Hosts Journalism Workshop for High School Students

Twenty South Florida high school students arrived at the University of Miami on July 6 for The Peace Sullivan/James Ansin High School Journalism and New Media Workshop, presented by the School of Communication. President Donna Shalala Answers Student Media Questions About New Health Care Law

University of Miami President Donna Shalala held a press conference with student journalists earlier this week to talk about the opening of health insurance exchanges on Oct. 1. Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Students, Alumnus, Faculty and Staff

The School of Communication honored its outstanding students, alumni, faculty and staff on May 9 at its Annual Awards Ceremony. Dean Gregory Shepherd presented the awards amid family, friends, faculty and staff at a reception at the Student Activities Center. Starting this fall, viewers throughout Coral Gables will see something very different when they tune in to the University of Miami School of Communication’s award-winning UMTV cable channel. Student Achievement Honored at Annual Student Showcase, PRADDYs

School of Communication students were awarded for their outstanding work this academic year on Monday night at the 65th Annual Student Showcase and the PRADDYs. The Showcase also honored alumna Lissette Gonzalez, meteorologist for WFOR, CBS4 in Miami, as the SoC Communicator of the Year. Gonzalez graduated UM with a double major in broadcast journalism and vocal performance. She went on to obtain an additional degree as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from Mississippi State University with honors.
