Documenting Hate

Professors and students from University of Miami School of Communication are joining forces with digital media organizations, universities, and civil rights groups from all over the country to begin documenting the increase of hate speech, specifically on social media, following the 2016 presidential election. “Right after the election, there were many, many instances of hate speech on Twitter, against different minorities, women, religious groups, and even against Trump supporters. Three Irish debaters are traveling to the University of Miami after winning the Irish Times Final. UM Hosting Third Annual ACC Debate Championship Tournament

University of Miami School of Communication is hosting the third annual ACC Debate Championship Tournament April 1-2, 2017. As part of the ACC Academic Consortium, the ACC Debate Championship Tournament sets the 15 member schools of the ACC against each other in a fierce academic debate. Alumnus Screening Documentary at UM

University of Miami School of Communication is hosting a screening of the social documentary Liberty Square: Power, History, and Race in Miami, on Tuesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. The screening takes place during Associate Professor Sigman Splichal’s Seminar in News Ethics and Problems class. April Dobbins was given the chance of a lifetime when she was selected as one of four 2017 Sundance Knight Fellows. Ibis Named Pacemaker Finalist

The 2016 Ibis yearbook edited by Emily Eidelman was named a Yearbook Pacemaker Finalist by the Associated Collegiate Press at the University of Minnesota in Jan. 2017. “This is an outstanding honor for the Ibis to be named a Yearbook Pacemaker Finalist along with 10 other college publications. Dean Lyon: In Pursuit of Visual Effects Creation

On Wednesday, February 15, Dean Lyon, founder and CEO of Splinter Studios, discussed the past, present, and future state of visual effects (VFX) and computer graphics in motion picture and television production with members of the Media Management Association.
