Join the University of Miami for the launch of the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit and a semester-long celebration of science, art, and data visualization from 6 to 8 p.m. on September 4 at Stanley and Jewell Glasgow Hall at UM’s School of Architecture. Katy Börner, Victor H. SoC Welcomes New Faculty

The School of Communication welcomes 11 new faculty members this fall across its four departments. Meet our new faculty members: Dr. Susan E. Morgan is director for the Center for Communication, Culture, and Change and a professor in Communication Studies. Dr. Morgan’s research interests involve the design and evaluation of persuasive messages targeting health behavior change in multicultural populations. Scholarship Endowment Honors Professor Stanley L. Harrison, Assists Undergraduate Writers

A $100,000 endowment, led by the Autumn Ridge Foundation with the help of School of Communication alumni, will honor a beloved public relations professor and provide lasting scholarship support to students who excel at writing. The Dr. Stanley L. Harrison Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund honors Professor Stanley “Stan” L. Harrison, who imparted his love of writing to hundreds of School of Communication students. Middle- and High-School Students Train at Hurricane Debate Institute

More than 40 middle- and high-school students from about a dozen Miami-Dade schools trained and competed in the 23rd annual Hurricane Debate Institute at the School of Communication over three week-long sessions in June and July. Students learned speech and argument skills, public forum, policy debate, student congress debate and Lincoln-Douglas debate.  The camp is highly interactive, featuring brief lectures, drills and debates, and written feedback to help them track their skills, said Leandra Lopez, co-director of the program. A number of bright and talented students can be found at The School of Communication. Each year, the SoC names a group of outstanding seniors who have achieved academic excellence during their time at the University of Miami. Brooke LeMaire was named the 2013 Outstanding Senior in Public Relations, the school’s most popular major. SoC Professor & Graduate Student Producing New Study on HIV/AIDS Prevention in Guatemala

Communication Studies Associate Professor Victoria Orrego Dunleavy& Ph.D. candidate Jasmine Phillips are on a mission this summer to improve the health of people in Guatemala. The School of Communication professor and graduate student are producing a new study about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention targeting young adults (18-25 years) in the Tz'utujil Mayan community of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. School of Communication Receives $1 Million Gift for Student Scholarships

University of Miami alumnus Robert Mann, the UM School of Communication Visiting Committee chair and a member of the University's Board of Trustees, has made a $1 million planned gift to a School of Communication scholarship fund. Mann, B.A.’70, has designated his donation to the Samuel and Grace Mann Endowed Scholarship Fund named after his parents. A group of exceptional students from the School of Communication are the recipients of a 2013 Wine Spectator Foundation Scholarship. The Wine Spectator Foundation Scholarship is an annual scholarship that awards $50,000 a year to deserving students studying communication at the University of Miami. University of Miami Radio Station WVUM 90.5 FM Increases Power to Reach More Listeners

Music lovers in all of Miami-Dade County can now listen to WVUM 90.5 FM, the University of Miami’s campus radio station, because of a newly installed transmitter and antenna.  The award-winning student-run radio station will reach 1.5 million more people with this upgrade. WVUM’s last transmitter upgrade was in 1998 and enabled its signal to be broadcast throughout Coral Gables and the surrounding areas. School Mourns the Loss of Jack Metzger, WVUM’s First Faculty Adviser

Former University of Miami faculty member and alumnus Jack Metzger, who taught communication courses for 14 years, passed away from cancer and heart disease earlier this year.  Metzger was 81. A host of children’s programs on local TV, Metzger, A.B. ‘53, taught radio production classes, including script writing and radio performance at UM, during the late 1950s’ through the 1960s’. He was a graduate of UM’s Radio Television and Film Department. In 1968, he became the first faculty adviser of WVUM 90.5 FM “The Voice,” the University’s campus radio station. [...]
