A group of exceptional students from the School of Communication are the recipients of a 2013 Wine Spectator Foundation Scholarship. The Wine Spectator Foundation Scholarship is an annual scholarship that awards $50,000 a year to deserving students studying communication at the University of Miami. University of Miami Radio Station WVUM 90.5 FM Increases Power to Reach More Listeners

Music lovers in all of Miami-Dade County can now listen to WVUM 90.5 FM, the University of Miami’s campus radio station, because of a newly installed transmitter and antenna.  The award-winning student-run radio station will reach 1.5 million more people with this upgrade. WVUM’s last transmitter upgrade was in 1998 and enabled its signal to be broadcast throughout Coral Gables and the surrounding areas. UM Finishes Second in National Student Advertising Competition

When students on the School of Communication's National Student Advertising Competition team were tasked with targeting millennials for storied cosmetics brand, Mary Kay, they decided to take big risks, said Kelly Smith, B.S.C. School Mourns the Loss of Jack Metzger, WVUM’s First Faculty Adviser

Former University of Miami faculty member and alumnus Jack Metzger, who taught communication courses for 14 years, passed away from cancer and heart disease earlier this year.  Metzger was 81. A host of children’s programs on local TV, Metzger, A.B. ‘53, taught radio production classes, including script writing and radio performance at UM, during the late 1950s’ through the 1960s’. He was a graduate of UM’s Radio Television and Film Department. In 1968, he became the first faculty adviser of WVUM 90.5 FM “The Voice,” the University’s campus radio station. [...]

University of Miami Wins 2013 National Student Advertising Competition

For the second time in three years, The University of Miami won first place at the highly competitive National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) in Phoenix last week, besting 17 other district-winning universities from around the country with a vibrant and interactive marketing and advertising campaign for Glidden® Paint at Walmart. The UM Team, The Miami Collective, also took home the award for best use of research for the second consecutive year. President Donna Shalala Answers Student Media Questions About New Health Care Law

University of Miami President Donna Shalala held a press conference with student journalists earlier this week to talk about the opening of health insurance exchanges on Oct. 1. Representatives from The Miami Hurricane, UMTV, WVUM, Ibis Yearbook and Distraction Magazine had a half-hour with Shalala, the former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, to discuss the Affordable Care Act and how it will impact students. Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Students, Alumnus, Faculty and Staff

The School of Communication honored its outstanding students, alumni, faculty and staff on May 9 at its Annual Awards Ceremony. Dean Gregory Shepherd presented the awards amid family, friends, faculty and staff at a reception at the Student Activities Center. Catie Staszak, who graduated in broadcast journalism and spoke at the School's commencement ceremony, received the School's Outstanding Senior Award. Italome Ohikhuare, an MFA in Motion Pictures whose thesis project, The Mermaid, is a film about schizophrenia, was honored as Outstanding MFA Student. Student Achievement Honored at Annual Student Showcase, PRADDYs

School of Communication students were awarded for their outstanding work this academic year on Monday night at the 65th Annual Student Showcase and the PRADDYs. The Showcase also honored alumna Lissette Gonzalez, meteorologist for WFOR, CBS4 in Miami, as the SoC Communicator of the Year. Gonzalez graduated UM with a double major in broadcast journalism and vocal performance. She went on to obtain an additional degree as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from Mississippi State University with honors.
