I am currently attending the 21-day Film in Japan study abroad program. Ed Talavera, the trip advisor and associate professor of Cinema and Interactive Media in the School of Communication, selected me as a teaching assistant, and I am honored to represent the UM and help lead a fantastic group of students. I traveled with Talavera to Greece [...]

The student-run magazine was honored by the annual Michigan State University Design Contest for College Students. “Nip and Tuck.” That provocative title coupled with a similarly edgy picture of a woman ready for plastic surgery was one of several covers that helped garner a top award for the University of Miami’s student-led Distraction magazine. The magazine was chosen as “Magazine of the Year” by the 20th Annual Michigan State University Design Contest for College Students. The fall, winter, and spring printed issues of Distraction were named “Magazine of the Year” in the overall design category. [...]

Well, Lorena Lopez, a first-year graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in Interactive Media, has done just that, and right here at the Lowe too. Lopez, who completed her undergraduate degree at Carnegie Mellon University and spent almost four years designing what she called “low-tech” interactives for the Miami Children’s Museum, knew she was meant for more. “I knew there [...]

The 2019 ’Canes Film Showcase will highlight student work

Six short films created by University of Miami film students will be screened in Los Angeles this week. Miguel Angel Tamayo, a University of Miami rising senior, has always been in love with film. For many years, he watched a film a day. When he saw Carlos Saura’s "Cria Cuervos," the 1976 Spanish drama of loss and loneliness, he was smitten. It inspired him to create his own short film called “Raising Ants,” a 19-minute drama of a young girl who loses her mother to cancer and is sent, along [...]

Graduating Senior Rebekah Chung’s Passion for Production

Finding one’s passion before graduating high school is rare, but Rebekah Chung is an outstanding exception. After one special trip to the movies, the School of Communication senior uncovered her love for production. “In high school, I studied film production and developed a love for telling stories, but I was still unclear as to how that could help inspire change. This thought changed when I went to watch a documentary at the movies with my mom one day,” said Chung. “I don’t remember the name of the film, but I [...]
