But while students constantly seek new educational and professional opportunities to strengthen their resumes, Pedrique-Valdes admitted having no resume. She has been working for the same renowned Telemundo-NBC company for over twenty-eight years. How did Pedrique-Valdes end up in her long-standing position? During her last year as a graphic design student at International Fine Arts College in Miami, Pedrique-Valdes was approached [...]

The University of Miami community is invited to an advance screening of WAVES at the Bill Cosford Cinema on Nov. 20 from 1:25-4 p.m. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Trey Edward Shults. WAVES is set against the vibrant landscape of South Florida and traces the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family—led by a well-intentioned but domineering father—as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss. ‘Off the Wire,’ UMTV’s Sketch Comedy Show

By: Isabella Vaccaro When asked what the goal of Off the Wire is, a resounding response from the three executive producers, junior Jeremy Erdheim, seniors Danny LaRose and Alberto Lopez, as well as head writer, sophomore Peter Gurl, almost knocks me off my chair: “to make people laugh!” “Hopefully!” Erdheim adds, laughing. “Easiest question I’ve ever been asked,” somebody says in the midst of the uproar. You can tell these four are passionate, to say the least, about this show, which airs bi-weekly in front of a live audience and [...]

Seven years, two cities, and eight job titles later, Robertson visited UM last week to give career advice to anxious undergrads.  “If you want to pivot, your 20s are the perfect time to do it,” said Robertson during her presentation to members [...]

A Living Laboratory for Good Writing

Veteran journalist Joseph B. Treaster draws on his continuing work for The New York Times to convey the lessons of good writing to communication students. Joe Treaster had the jitters. The cub reporter for The Miami Hurricane knew hardly anything about Claude Pepper or U.S. policy on China. Yet, he had to cover a China speech by the Florida congressman for the student newspaper. “I was sweating,” Treaster told students in one of the Writing for the Digital Age classes he now teaches as a professor in the School of [...]
