Although her position is regularly behind the scenes, University of Miami School of Communication alumna Rachel Schreibman, B.S.C. ’10, is certainly one to watch.
Since settling in California, Schreibman has contributed to highly notable films. Her latest Hollywood credits include The Jungle Book, Transformers: The Last Knight and Star Trek: Beyond.
As an assistant editor, Schreibman’s specialty is ensuring a fluid filming and editing process. Ultimately, this talented ‘Cane is responsible for conjuring cinematic magic.
“University of Miami gave me the tools I needed to hone my craft and learn the necessary technological skills,” said Schreibman. “More importantly, it had a supportive atmosphere where my classmates and I were encouraged to create constantly. I was able to work on my editing inside and outside the classroom.”
Konstantia Kontaxis, associate professor for the Department of Cinema and Interactive Media, describes Schreibman as her hardest-working student to date and recounted her stellar work ethic.
“She was amazing. She would always pursue projects beyond the class. She would do two or three projects, minimum, and that’s because she wanted to be productive,” said Kontaxis.
As the first UM recipient of the American Cinema Editors (ACE) Internship, a prestigious program that assigns recent graduates with industry leaders as mentors, Schreibman paved the way for aspiring editors at the SoC.
“In 2016, I was given an opportunity to mentor an ACE intern of my own,” said Schreibman. “It just so happened to be Gretchen Schroeder, a fellow UM grad! It felt amazing to come full circle. So many people helped open the door for me to pursue my dreams, I was truly honored to give back in a similar fashion to a fellow ‘Cane.”
What’s next? Schreibman will work on the CGI and live-action rendition of the 1994 Disney classic, The Lion King, and continue dazzling moviegoers for years to come. Her advice to aspiring editors:
“Keep creating and edit everything you can get your hands on! And when you get out to L.A., contact some ‘Canes!”
