SportsDesk Wins Again

The University of Miami received two honors from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter: a win for UMTV and the opportunity to host the inaugural Suncoast Student Production Awards. On April 30th, the University of Miami School of Communication is hosting the 70th Annual Student Media Awards. The ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of UM’s student media during the 2018-2019 academic year, including Distraction Magazine, UMTV programs, Ibis Yearbook, and The Miami Hurricane. UM Helps Launch Journalism Studies Research Network to Examine The Mexican Journalistic Landscape

Researchers from 11 Mexican and U.S. academic institutions, including the University of Miami School of Communication, have formed the National Journalism Studies Research Network to carry out the third wave of the Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS) in Mexico. The research network will collect data to better understand and explain the realities of journalism in Mexico and compare Mexican journalists on a global scale through a rigorous administration of WJS-crafted questionnaires. Exploring the Global Definition of Journalism

Considering the diverse political, social, and economic environments spanning the globe, the definition of journalism morphs from culture to culture. School of Communication Professor Jyotika Ramaprasad explored these diversities through extensive quantitative research in India and Botswana. Ramaprasad serves on the executive board of the Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS), an academically-driven data collection project. In its second phase, WJS members collected data  from 27,500 journalists spanning 67 countries. Ibis and Distraction Receive National Awards

It was a celebratory spring break for the Ibis and Distraction staffs. Two Gold Crowns, one Best of Show, a Second Place for Best of Show, and two Apples were awarded between two national conferences. The Ibis, Distraction print issue, and Distraction online page were honored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) in New York City at the Spring National College Media Convention 2019 with Gold Crown awards. UMTV Wins 6 Awards Out of 10 NBS-AERho Nominations
