Journalism Graduate in Competition for CNN Heroes Award

A 2009 graduate of the School of Communication is being considered for a 2013 CNN Heroes Award for her work in helping refugee girls adjust to their new lives in the United States.Blair Brettschneider, 24, was nominated for her work as founder and executive director of GirlForward. The nonprofit organization serves girls ages 12-21 who have been resettled in Chicago from war-torn countries around the world. Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Students, Alumnus, Faculty and Staff

The School of Communication honored its outstanding students, alumni, faculty and staff on May 9 at its Annual Awards Ceremony. Dean Gregory Shepherd presented the awards amid family, friends, faculty and staff at a reception at the Student Activities Center. Catie Staszak, who graduated in broadcast journalism and spoke at the School's commencement ceremony, received the School's Outstanding Senior Award. Starting this fall, viewers throughout Coral Gables will see something very different when they tune in to the University of Miami School of Communication’s award-winning UMTV cable channel. Student Achievement Honored at Annual Student Showcase, PRADDYs

School of Communication students were awarded for their outstanding work this academic year on Monday night at the 65th Annual Student Showcase and the PRADDYs. The Showcase also honored alumna Lissette Gonzalez, meteorologist for WFOR, CBS4 in Miami, as the SoC Communicator of the Year. Gonzalez graduated UM with a double major in broadcast journalism and vocal performance. She went on to obtain an additional degree as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from Mississippi State University with honors. National Geographic Exhibition Features Work of SoC Photography Professor

Maggie Steber, a visiting lecturer at the School of Communication, is one of 11 photographers being honored by the National Geographic Society with an exhibition at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C.The exhibition, Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers on Assignment, opens Thursday and features 99 images taken by the photographers for the magazine since 2000.
