UM Alumna Receives 2018 Florida Bar Judge of the Year Award

The award was presented on June 14 during the Florida Bar Judicial Luncheon by Michael Higer, Florida Bar president. SoC Mourns the Passing of Alumnus Mike McCormick

By: Karina Valdes The University of Miami School of Communication is mourning the loss of its alumnus Mike McCormick, B.S.C. ’04, who passed away on Monday while covering extreme weather in North Carolina for WYFF News4. McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer both died when a tree fell on their news van. McCormick joined WYFF News4 in 2007 as a reporter. Two SoC Students Receive Scholarship

UM Family Night with the Miami Marlins featured a day at the ballpark with activities for faculty and staff, and a special pregame on-field presentation from The Miami Marlins Community Foundation Suzanne Rayson Scholarship Fund to two School of Communication students.  On April 14, Amanda Fuentes and David Perez were each presented with a $2,500 scholarship from The Suzanne Rayson Scholarship Fund benefiting students studying broadcast journalism who have shown an interest in sports broadcasting. Staying Up All Night for a Good Cause

On Feb. 23, I volunteered to stay up all night to help a local nonprofit during the ninth annual PhilADthropy, where students like me create campaigns and other communication pieces in 25 hours.  The event kicked off at 11 a.m. at the University of Miami School of Communication’s courtyard with speeches by assistant professor of practice in the Department of Strategic Communication and PhilADthropy founder, Meryl Blau, and dean of the School of Communication, Dr. Gregory J. Two Student Packages Crowned “Best Of” by BEA Festival of Media Arts

For the first time in University of Miami history, two student packages have won the Best Of award from the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts. The festival is an “international exhibition of award-winning faculty and student works,” according to the BEA website. Sophomore David Perez and freshman Danyel De Villiers won Best Of in the Television Sports Story/Feature category. Alumnus Oliver Redsten, B.S.C. Ninth Annual PhilADthropy is Launching to Help Local Nonprofits

Eleven leading non-profit organizations from South Florida were chosen to participate in the Ninth Annual PhilADthropy at the University of Miami School of Communication, where students create vibrant campaigns and other advertising materials in one 25-hour, coffee-fueled marathon for some of the most deserving local non-profits. Society of Professional Journalists Focuses on Jobs and Internships

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is the oldest organization representing journalists in the United States. Joseph B. Treaster, professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Management, has recently revamped the University of Miami’s chapter of SPJ and is the group's adviser. “The Society of Professional Journalists at the University of Miami is focused on getting jobs and internships for its members,” Treaster said.
