Nine UM SoC Faculty Awarded a Creative Activity and Research Grant

Nine University of Miami School of Communication faculty were awarded a School of Communication Creative Activity and Research Grant from the Center for Communication, Culture, and Change for the 2018-2019 academic year. Two SoC Students Receive Scholarship

UM Family Night with the Miami Marlins featured a day at the ballpark with activities for faculty and staff, and a special pregame on-field presentation from The Miami Marlins Community Foundation Suzanne Rayson Scholarship Fund to two School of Communication students.  On April 14, Amanda Fuentes and David Perez were each presented with a $2,500 scholarship from The Suzanne Rayson Scholarship Fund benefiting students studying broadcast journalism who have shown an interest in sports broadcasting. MMA Meeting: How to Sell Noncommercial Television

On April 10, the Media Management Association hosted Heidi Lieb, senior director of business development at WPBT, to talk about the mechanism and strategies used to sell public television underwriting messages. She came to the South Florida noncommercial television station with considerable sales experience in the private sector, including a three-year stint as an account executive at ESPN. Ibis and Distraction Win at CSPA

The 2017 Ibis yearbook won 57 Gold Circle Awards or individual awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University.   “This is an outstanding number of individual awards. I am proud of Kaitlin Castillo and her staff for producing a great University of Miami Ibis yearbook that is recognized nationally as well as on campus,” said Randy Stano, editorial adviser for the Ibis yearbook. Professor, Knight Chair Receives Graphics Journalism Award

The Majeri Award for Graphics Journalism recognizes innovation and leadership in the graphic journalism industry. Presented by the Ball State University Department of Journalism in Muncie, Ind., the award is given to an individual who has created a body of work that improves graphics reporting. UM Debate Wins 2018 Lafayette Debates

For the first time since the inception of the Lafayette Debates, a team composed of only women clinched the victory. On April 8, Leandra Lopez and Julia Lynch, top debaters representing the University of Miami, defeated the team from France’s École de Guerre to win the annual debate tournament held at the French Embassy in Washington D.C. New Technologies Add Interactive Element to Physical Computing

As of the spring 2018 semester, Cinema and Interactive Media students at the School of Communication can create tangible mockups through the school’s recent purchase of a vinyl cutter, 3D printer, and computer numeric control machine (CNC). The Public Relations Experience Program (PREP) students stayed close to home on Friday, Feb. 23 as they assisted with PhilADthropy at the University of Miami School of Communication. Usually all-nighters are not encouraged, but this annual philanthropic event proves to be an exception.
