University of Miami’s student-run newspaper, The Miami Hurricane, was recognized with 10 Society of Professional Journalists Florida Sunshine State Awards, including nine first place awards, on July 9 during the 22nd annual competition at the Firefighters Memorial Building in Miami.

The Miami Hurricane, under editor Nicholas Gangemi, B.S. ’16, was awarded Best Student Publication and Best Website in Florida, competing in the college newspaper high frequency sub-category. The high frequency sub-category evaluates newspapers published five more or times per month. To win Best Student Publication, three issues of the newspaper from 2015 were judged on writing, photography, and design. The newspaper’s website won the Best Website Award after judges reviewed entries to determine which website had content in 2015 that best covered its community.

“Everyone at The Hurricane did tremendous work – in print, online, the writing, the editing, and the photography. These awards just underscore the quality of the work they are doing every week and in every section,” says Samuel Terilli, department chair for Journalism and Media Management.

The Sunshine State Awards honor excellence in journalism throughout the state of Florida with journalists from out-of-state judging the entries and determining the winners. To compete in the student division, students must have published their work in 2015 through a student media outlet in Florida.

The Miami Hurricane was founded in 1929 and is edited and produced by undergraduate students. The newspaper is published semi-weekly on Mondays and Thursdays during the academic year. Visit http://www.themiamihurricane.com/ to read the online version of The Miami Hurricane.
