University of Miami School of Communication

The School of Communication believes that the community is a valuable learning resource for its students. The School’s programs seek to regularly engage their faculty and students in community-based activities.

Our student run advertising and public relations agency PRADUM, regularly assists community organizations and non-profits with their development of strategic communication campaigns. Our journalism students contribute regularly to local community news and information efforts such as the Grand Avenue News and the Coral Gables Home Page. The University of Miami News Service based in the School provides student written community news stories for the Miami Herald and Sun-Sentinel local news organizations.

UMTV is broadcast through the community Comcast cable television network. Student productions provide a range of information, news, public affairs and entertainment programming. The Bill Cosford Cinema is a community treasure offering weekly programs of the best in new and classic motion pictures.

Our National Parks is a web site featuring articles, photographs, maps and multimedia produced by journalism students about parks and recreational areas across the country run by the National Park Service of the United States, including the Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks. Since 2002, students have prepared a series of about 450 articles.

On a national and international basis, the School annually hosts the We Media Conference which is dedicated to the revolution in community and social media and how it is changing the face of journalism. The School’s journalism programs collaborate with the World Special Olympics to provide online multimedia coverage of the winter and summer games connecting the athletes with their communities around the globe.

The Knight Center for International Media is dedicated to connecting the School and its faculty and students with communities throughout the world in order to empower professional and citizen journalists to tell the stories that will help solve the world’s most difficult challenges.
