Distraction Magazine and Ibis Yearbook Shine in Awards Competition
By: Barbara Gutierrez
Distraction magazine and Ibis yearbook received major awards from the Society for News Design student competition at Michigan State University.
Distraction swept the magazine spread competition, winning first, second, and honorable mention awards in the category, said Randy Stano, professor of practice in journalism and media management and editorial adviser for Distraction and Ibis yearbook.
“It is great to see the recognition for UM student publications in a competition that had entries from outside the United States,” he said.
Distraction, which issues that resonate with students and features colorful graphics, trend stories, and fun-filled accounts of college life, has repeatedly won prizes in this competition, including a 2009 first-place title for overall magazine design.
Isabella Vaccaro directed the magazine this past year, working closely with co-executive editors Lindsey Bornstein and Anya Balsamides and managing editor Gabby Rosenbloom.
Ibis yearbook took home third place in Special Sections for its “This is Miami” section, which walks the reader through the city’s various neighborhoods with stunning pictures of areas such as Brickell, Coral Gables, and Little Havana.
“It was good to see the Ibis recognized in the competition, which is normally dominated by newspapers, magazines, and websites,” said Stano.
Morgan Thomson and Casey Lue worked as top editors of the Ibis.
