UM Debate Wins First Tournament Championship of 2015… In Spanish!

The University of Miami Debate Team earned top honors at the University of North Georgia debate invitational over the weekend of Sept. 25-27.  Eight students represented The U in Parliamentary Debate competition in English and in Spanish at the event in Gainesville, Georgia. Gift Honors Steven Sotloff’s Legacy

Steven Joel Sotloff was a devoted journalist, whose passion for his craft took him to faraway places to cover important stories and dangerous conflicts. Game of Thrones Director, David Nutter, Wins an Emmy

Former University of Miami student David Nutter won an Emmy on Sunday for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. Nutter won the award for directing “Mother’s Mercy,” the final episode of the fifth season of Game of Thrones. His win contributed to the series’ record-breaking night.  “Mother’s Mercy” is the Game of Thrones episode that lit up the Internet with fans of the show disputing the fate of beloved character, Jon Snow. A sea of black dresses, gold pins, and smiling faces greeted guests attending the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital “It’s All About the Kids” gala at the JW Marriot Marquis Miami on Sept. 19. The smiling faces guests saw upon arrival belonged to members of the University of Miami School of Communication PREP team. Assisting the Gala for more than five years now, members of PREP help the event organizers and public relations committee by assisting with greeting guests, checking in media, coordinating the red carpet, and escorting VIPs.   [...]

SoC Professor Nominated for Third Emmy

Professor Jeffrey Stern was nominated for his third Emmy in the category Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series as Dialogue Editor on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Stern has been with the show for all five seasons.  As dialogue editor, he is responsible for editing everything that is recorded during production-- and he is given only six days to edit all the recordings he is given. “It’s definitely a sprint more than a marathon,” Stern said. Rwandan Debaters to Visit UM

In their first-ever appearance in Florida, Rwandan debaters from the African country’s iDebate Rwanda program will visit the University of Miami for a public debate about genocide recovery, forgiveness, and justice. The UM Debate Team is hosting the event, which will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 28 at the Shalala Student Center Senate Room. In a recent survey of what Americans know about science, we asked people to interpret the chart you see here and tell us what it showed. Six-in-ten (63%) identify the best interpretation of this chart as “the more sugar people eat, the more likely they are to get cavities.” This kind of chart — known as a scatterplot — is very familiar to people who are used to working with numbers, such as economists, scientists, researchers and data journalists. It is a good way to show a relationship between two variables.
