UM Debate Team Advances to Finals at Liberty University Tournament

By: Jabria Roscoe University of Miami’s Policy Debate Team advanced to the final round of the Liberty University (LU) Debate Tournament held Jan. 24-26 in Lynchburg, Virginia. The LU tournament is a nationally ranked annual debate competition. The UM team of Julia Lynch and Zach Homeijer won five of six preliminary debates, earning them a bye into the quarterfinal round where they won a unanimous decision against George Mason University. UM Student Publications Dominate National Awards Show

University of Miami student publications were recently recognized with top awards at the College Media Association and Associated Collegiate Press Mega College Media Workshop in Washington D.C.   The 2018 Ibis yearbook picked up it 13th Pacemaker Award, while The Miami Hurricane and Distraction magazine were named as Pacemaker finalists. The University of Miami is the 2020 Social Justice Debates National Champion. Two UMTV Shows Nominated for College Television Awards

Policy Debate Duo Competes in Detroit

Over the weekend of Oct. 25, 2019, the University of Miami policy debate team of Zachary Homeijer and Julia Lynch competed in the Varsity division of the Wayne State Ziegelmueller Invitational in Detroit, Michigan. Remembering Moses Shumow

Moses Shumow, Ph.D. ’10, a beloved University of Miami School of Communication alumnus tragically passed away on the morning of Oct. 22. He was riding his bicycle near Boston when he was struck by an MBTA Commuter Rail train. Shumow was living in Massachusetts, where he recently began working as an associate professor for journalism at Emerson College.
