UM Film Students Aim High, Go West: Canes Film Festival Winners Screen in L.A.

UM Alumni Unite to Produce a Feature Film

Recent University of Miami School of Communication graduate, Brody Gusar, M.F.A. ’09, is off to Florida Supercon to showcase his new film, The Next Big Thing. Directed, co-written, edited, and produced by Gusar, the film was also produced by three other UM alumni, Mustan Dawood, M.F.A. ’09, Krystyna Ahlers, B.S. ’10, and Brendan Merrill, B.S.C. ’08, and co-written with Iain Roush. SoC Alumna Publishes Book

Erica Larence, a Motion Pictures major and member of the Class of 2013, recently published a book, Caine and Mabel. The book is about a girl who adopts a rescue dog after her best friend moves away. Larence said that the idea for the book came from her rescue dog, Caine, who is named after the Miami Hurricanes. Larence wrote the book in January of 2015 and then edited it for about a month. When he joined a fraternity in freshman year at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, Miami native Alejandro Victor Pallares never imagined someday he’d be shooting a film about the process. Creative Activity and Research Grants Winners Announced

The School of Communication has announced the winners of the 2015-2016 Creative Activity and Research Grants. This year, both recipients hail from the Department of Cinema and Interactive Media. Dr. Christina Lane and Professor Dia Kontaxis have been selected by an interdisciplinary committee of peers from the school to receive direct cost funding to support their projects. Building Community Foundations: Career Advancement at the School of Communication

The blustery winds and threatening rain didn’t prevent students from attending the School of Communication’s Recruitment Pavilion, the first career fair organized by the Stein Family Office of Career Services, featuring companies companies tailored specifically to SoC industries. Student Films Win Big at MIFF

The University of Miami School of Communication was a big winner at Miami International Film Festival’s (MIFF) CinemaSlam, taking home four out of seven possible awards. SoC films won Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Director, and Miami CinemaSlam Champion 2016 at the fifth annual local student competition.
