UM Debate Team Rankings for Fall 2014

The Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) and the National Debate Tournament (NDT) have posted their first rankings of the year. The University of Miami Debate Team is currently #19 on the CEDA list and #17 on the NDT list. These lists reflect overall squad performance. What started as a hobby for advertising graduate Olga Martinez has turned into a small business that has captured the hearts of children and parents all over Miami. As a favor in 2009, Martinez was asked to draw a cartoon resembling her cousin so she could have stickers to decorate birthday gifts. UM Debate Team Wins Multiple Awards

10 UM Students were introduced to intercollegiate debate competition for the first time at the Sunshine State Scrimmage hosted by UCF in Orlando. Competing against teams from UF and UCF, the UM Novice team of Thalia Garcia and Lucas Baker placed first, with Baker named the 2nd place individual speaker and Garcia 3rd. UM Debate Team Wins Georgia State National Debate Tournament

The University of Miami Debate Team began its year as we did last year, by winning the Novice Division Championship of the Intercollegiate Debate Tournament at Georgia State University, held September 20-22 in Atlanta.  UM entered four two-person teams in the policy debate tournament, held under the auspices of the American Debate Association, the Cross Examination Debate Association, and the National Debate Tournament.  Competition was divided into Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Novice Divisions based on experience of the debaters.  UM’s squad entered a novice team, two JV teams, and an [...]

The School of Communication welcomes 11 new faculty members this fall across its four departments. Meet our new faculty members: Dr. Susan E. A $100,000 endowment, led by the Autumn Ridge Foundation with the help of School of Communication alumni, will honor a beloved public relations professor and provide lasting scholarship support to students who excel at writing. The Dr. Stanley L. Harrison Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund honors Professor Stanley “Stan” L. Harrison, who imparted his love of writing to hundreds of School of Communication students.
