Students, Latin American Journalists Connect, Create During Chicas Poderosas

University of Miami School of Communication students and faculty connected with a global community of women journalists and learned important digital storytelling skills last week when the school hosted Chicas Poderosas Miami, the first event of its kind in the United States. Celebrate Achievement At The School of Communication Annual Awards Ceremony

Students, alumni, faculty and staff will be honored at the School of Communication Annual Awards Celebration from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9 in the third floor activities rooms at the Student Activities Center, 1330 Miller Drive in Coral Gables. Annual Student Showcase to Honor Student Media and Alumna

The Department of Journalism and Media Management will host the 65th Annual Student Showcase from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday April 28 to honor outstanding contributions in student media. Students from UMTV, The Miami Hurricane, Distraction Magazine and the Ibis Yearbook will be recognized for their achievements throughout the year. SoC To Host Chicas Poderosas Interactive Storytelling Workshop

Chicas Poderosas — an organization dedicated to empowering Latin American women journalists to excel in visual storytelling, data visualization and interactive media with hands-on skills training — will hold its first workshop in the United States from April 17 to 20 in Miami. School of Communication students, faculty and alumni participated in the Online News Association conference October 17-19 in Atlanta. The School of Communication also is the academic partner in the Association’s Online Journalism Awards. The conference is the one of the largest digital journalism conferences in the world, providing learning sessions, demonstrations and knowledge sharing for hundreds of media professionals. Barbecue Unites Alumni and Students for Homecoming

To public relations and political science senior Allison Novack, C-SPAN is the best of many worlds— a media outlet with a public service mission in government. When she was offered an internship with the network over the summer, she leapt at the opportunity. As Commencement Nears, Canfield Clan Celebrates Another ’Cane

Molly Canfield started wearing University of Miami-themed apparel as a 10-year-old growing up in the South. Call for Entries: Wine Spectator Foundation Competition To Award Up To $50,000 For Student Projects

The Wine Spectator Foundation will award up to $50,000 to School of Communication undergraduate and graduate students for projects about wine, food, restaurants, travel or tourism.
