UM Debate Ranking Rises to Fourth Place

The University of Miami Debate Team completed its competition in Policy Debate ranked fourth nationally by the American Debate Association for 2014-15, rising two spots from sixth place in 2013-14. The nationally ranked second place Novice Debate squad and the nationally ranked second place Individual Novice Debate team drove this impressive performance. UM Debate Hosts Irish Collegiate Debate Champions

On April 6, University of Miami’s Debate Team hosted a public debate with three collegiate debate champions from Ireland. The Irish debaters were winners in the Irish Times National Debate Championship earning them a tour of the United States, during which they participate in a series of audience debates. Canes Film Fest Hype

On Thursday, April 9, PREP students took over the UC breezeway to promote the University of Miami’s 18th annual Canes Film Festival. PREP students tabled to raise awareness of the upcoming event by engaging with students and faculty passing by throughout the day. Event flyers and popcorn were distributed while the students answered questions about the festival. “Tabling in the breezeway is a great way of letting people know what is happening on campus,” said PREP manager Sarah Driks. One Water, UNDP and SIWI Partnering for a Documentary on Water and Sustainable Development

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) have partnered with One Water to develop a film on water and sustainable development. As UN's Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson says, "Water is a precondition for human existence." This documentary is a collaboration with Professors Sanjeev Chatterjee, Ed Talavera and Ali Habashi from the School of Communication's Cinema and Interactive Media Department. Traveling Haitian Film Series Culminates with the Screening of La Belle Vie: The Good Life and Papa Machete

Ayiti Images, a traveling Florida film series, ends its successful 2014-2015 run with a double-feature screening about the Haitian experience. Cops and Rubbers

Professor Lien Tran makes games for social change, a fun and interactive way to raise awareness for global issues. On March 24, Tran invited students and professors to play a game called “Cops and Rubbers,” which teaches about condoms being used as contraband in countries like South Africa, Russia, and the U.S. In these countries, police use condoms as evidence that those carrying them are sex workers. This is a problem because it makes sex workers scared to carry around condoms, putting both them and their clients’ health at risk. [...]
