The University of Miami School of Communication is mourning the loss of its alumnus Mike McCormick, B.S.C. ’04, who passed away on Monday while covering extreme weather in North Carolina for WYFF News4. McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer both died when a tree fell on their news van.
McCormick joined WYFF News4 in 2007 as a reporter. Before that he worked in Arkansas at KHBS/KHOG.
“Mike was a terrific student and a great reporter. He was very outgoing and I remember him well. This is tragic news and my heart goes out to his family,” said Paul Driscoll, associate professor and vice dean for academic affairs.
