Distinguished scholar and award-winning author, Ronald L. Jackson II, is joining the University of Miami School of Communication faculty in spring 2024.
Jackson, a former dean of Arts and Sciences, and past president of the National Communication Association (NCA) and Eastern Communication Association (ECA), comes to us from the University of Cincinnati where he was a Distinguished University Research Professor. He held several faculty appointments at Penn State University and University of Illinois prior to joining the faculty at University of Cincinnati. Additionally, he has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at University of Graz and has served as Distinguished Lecturer for many universities and organizations including, most recently, Arizona State University. He is an International Communication Association Fellow and received numerous Distinguished Scholar Awards from NCA and ECA.
At UM, Jackson will be jointly appointed as a tenured professor in the Department of Communication Studies and the Department of Journalism and Media Management.
Dr. Sallie Hughes, Journalism and Media Management department chair, noted, “We are thrilled to have Dr. Jackson as a colleague and to add his expertise in critical approaches to representation in news and media more broadly to our research, Ph.D. mentoring, and teaching portfolios.”
Jackson’s area of expertise is rhetoric and intercultural communication with a Ph.D. from Howard University. He is the author of over 85 publications including 17 books, over 75 articles and chapters, and editor of several journal special issues. His research focuses on the study of masculinity, identity negotiation, race, and culture. Jackson’s current project, “Communication: Ph.D. Pipeline Program,” is a grant supporting a two-year national pilot program that aims to prepare Black students for graduate school and subsequent careers in the academe as professors of communication.
Dean Karin Wilkins applauds this “as an honor for our School of Communication and the University of Miami, to recruit someone with such a valuable and significant record of scholarship and of leadership, who will elevate our reputation and inspire our collective mission.”
