University of Miami students took the nation by storm at the 57th Annual National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition, receiving several nominations and taking home eight awards. UMTV’s Spanish-language news show, UniMiami, was recognized as the Best Video Newscast (Prerecorded) making it the first award the program has won.

“It was definitely a long-time coming,” said Alexa Eckembrecher, one of the executive producers of UniMiami. “It would have never happened if it weren’t for all the members that worked on this program before me and my co-EP, Bryan Acevedo, and all of those that continue to participate now.”

The annual competition is hosted by NBS-AERho, the nation’s only collegiate honor society for electronic media students. Universities nationwide compete each year to receive recognition on their work in a range of media categories from podcasts and magazines, to music videos and sports programs.

As for the future of UniMiami, Eckembrecher says it will “continue to uphold its values of creativity and perseverance, in order to hopefully continue to be recognized for its distinction.”
