UMTV swept the 56th Annual National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition with 10 nominations recognizing the organization’s excellence in TV production. Winners will be announced at the 77th NBS-AERho: National Electronic Media Association National Convention, March 7-9 in Philadelphia.
“It feels amazing,” said Breana Ross, senior and UMTV station manager, who anchored the nominated UMTV Midterm Election Special. “It’s actually the first show that I have been physically on that’s been nominated for an award, so that feels amazing. All the hard work paid off.”
The station is nominated for top Video News Package, Video News Segment, Video Feature Segment, Video Newscast (Live), Video Magazine Program, Video Documentary Program, Video Sports Segment, Video Sports Program, and Video Comedy Program. UMTV received two nominations in the Video Newscast (Live) category. The wide-ranging recognitions emphasize the diverse content crafted at UMTV.
The student-run station produces a weekly newscast and sports show, late night comedy program, entertainment show, and two Spanish-language programs under the guidance of School of Communication faculty.
“UMTV has an excellent team of dedicated faculty and staff members who are committed to all of our productions,” said Ed Julbe, senior lecturer and UMTV faculty adviser. “But none of it would be possible without our students. They’re awesome. They volunteer countless hours each and every week and do whatever it takes to make each show the best it can be. We couldn’t do it without them.”
This March will mark the 56th Annual National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition in which submissions are judged by more than 80 industry leaders to distinguish finalists.
UMTV’s secret to striking success? Boriana Treadwell, lecturer and UMTV faculty adviser, sums it up: “Talented students, tireless work, putting lots of hours and effort into the work, and lots and lots of passion.”
