An advance screening of Before the Flood, a documentary on climate change, is coming to the Bill Cosford Cinema.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award-winning actor, environmental activist, and U.N. Messenger of Peace, Leonardo DiCaprio, Before the Flood presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet. The film follows DiCaprio as he travels to five continents and the Arctic speaking to scientists, world leaders, activists, and local residents to gain a deeper understanding of this complex issue and investigate concrete solutions to the most pressing environmental challenge of our time.

“We welcome this golden opportunity to further the dialogue about climate change and rising sea levels, especially because it advances an educational priority for us,” says Dr. Christina Lane, Chair of the Department of Cinema and Interactive Media. “These concerns are central to our teaching and research at the University of Miami, and so many of our students care deeply about environmental issues.”

Late last year, DiCaprio and Stevens stopped by the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to learn about the research scientists are conducting on climate change.

“I see Before the Flood, and this event in particular, as a terrific example of the power of film because it brings people together into a community setting, and offers positive solutions and practical suggestions for a better future,” says Lane.

The screening takes place on Tuesday, October 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the Bill Cosford Cinema. Stevens and co-producer Brett Ratner will be available for a Q&A session after the screening.
