University student debaters from the western hemisphere will compete at the School of Communication this weekend as the University of Miami Debate Team hosts the inaugural Pan American Universities Debating Championships. 

The tournament uses the rules and format of the World Universities Debating Championship. It features six preliminary debates and an appropriate number of elimination debates leading to Pan American champions in two divisions, Spanish language and English language. 

Students, faculty and debate enthusiasts are invited to attend the tournament, which begins at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 26. A complete schedule may be found below. Food will not be provided for spectators.

The tournament is sponsored by the World Debate Institute.
