
Associate Professor of Professional Practice
(Jack) Wesley P. Miller IV brings more than 30 years of professional experience in public relations to the University of Miami School of Communication. A retired United States Air Force public affairs officer, Jack served from 1992 to 2014, including high-level assignments supporting the Secretary of Defense, the State Department, Congress, and the White House on national security issues. He also worked extensively with state and local governments.
While at the Pentagon, Jack served as the official spokesperson for the United States Air Force and led crisis communication efforts on some of the most critical defense issues of the time. During the height of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Jack served as the PR advisor on Middle East Policy under the Secretary of Defense. His strategic counsel contributed to major initiatives, including securing a $34 billion aircraft contract.
Internationally, Jack has advised public relations efforts in more than 10 countries. His global experience spans humanitarian initiatives in Africa to managing combat media operations in Afghanistan, where he served as a senior advisor to President Hamid Karzai and Afghan cabinet ministers. From 2009 to 2010, he oversaw all Afghan and most U.S. media engagements in the region.
Following his military service, Jack continued to serve the veteran and defense communities. He supports military veterans working for Wounded Warrior Project and being a co-founder of the South Florida Defense Alliance, and serves as an advisor to the Miami-Dade County Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee. He has also held the role of Senior Counsel for Government & Military Affairs at rbb Communications and is the longtime PR and protocol director for the Miami Beach Air & Sea Show.
In addition to consulting, Jack is a sought-after expert witness in defamation cases. At the University of Miami, he is actively engaged in shared governance and student life. He serves as a faculty senator, chairs the School of Communication’s Security Committee and the school’s scholarship committee. He also advises several student organizations, including UM PRSSA, the UM Veterans Student Organization, and UM political student groups. He sits on the university’s student disciplinary hearing board.
Throughout his career, Jack has been widely recognized for excellence in public affairs. He was named the Department of Defense’s #1 Public Relations Officer and has received 19 U.S. Air Force-level public relations awards. His team earned the Public Relations Society of America’s prestigious Best of Silver Anvil Award in 2010 for outstanding issues management.
