Debating in English When it’s your Second Language

A language barrier can prevent someone from understanding you in the simplest of situations leaving you frustrated, anxious, and sometimes even ready to give up. For Melody Li, a sophomore who moved to the U.S. from China to pursue a bachelor’s in Marine Science and Biology at the University of Miami, learning English as a second language gave her the opportunity to attend a college outside of her country, but left her feeling nervous conversing with peers.  "It was an easy choice,” Li said of selecting to attend UM. “It's [...]

UM Documentary Class Combines Science and Communication

By: Karina Valdes The relationship between sisters is a special one and Mischa and Micaela’s is no different. The siblings spend countless hours playing, singing, and dancing together, but Mischa and Micaela’s relationship is all the more unique due to Micaela’s diagnosis of autism. In a documentary short created by students from a class co-taught by two University of Miami professors, Mischa and her family share their story. “Mischa has had to grow up a little bit faster than she’s supposed to, but what’s been so beautiful is watching Micaela [...]

Petty Offenses Communication Workshop at SoC

University of Miami School of Communication faculty are collaborating with the School of Law and the Human Rights Clinic (HRC) in hosting a communication workshop ahead of the HRC's Petty Offenses Symposium, which will take place on September 20-21. Petty offenses are laws written with the intention of bringing order to communities, and include minor crimes such as jaywalking and loitering. Unfortunately, charges for these minor offenses are disproportionally used to persecute the poor, people of color, and other marginalized groups worldwide.   The Petty Offenses Symposium brings together an international delegation of more than [...]

Our Faculty Telling the Hurricane Dorian Story

When the School of Communication’s Alberto Cairo, associate professor and Knight Chair in Visual Journalism, and Joseph B. Treaster, professor, saw Hurricane Dorian threatening Miami, their first thought was: How can we help people understand this momentous event, how can we tell the story? Both ended up publishing work in The New York Times, which now has more than 4 million subscribers around the world. Talk about Miami faculty impact. Cairo, created a fast-paced narrative with graphics for The Times’ Op Ed Page on how to accurately read the National [...]

2019 Dolphin Entertainment Summer Internship Program in New York City

This past summer I had the opportunity to intern in my hometown of New York City with Dolphin Entertainment founded by Bill O’Dowd, adjunct professor for the Department of Cinema and Interactive Media (CIM). Dolphin is located on Third Avenue and shares the office of 42 West, an entertainment-based public relations firm. Working under the direct supervision of Emerson Davis, director of development and production, I was able to learn the ropes of production development processes through first-hand experiences. I commuted into Manhattan from Long Island three days a week. Each [...]

A Firsthand Lesson in Parliamentary Politics

Students in the School of Communication’s London program learned how the United Kingdom is navigating Brexit as they visited news, public relations and advertising companies in July. Walking past Parliament, Nicolas Sampedro and other University of Miami students saw a man in a clown suit wearing a mask of Boris Johnson, who was just days away from becoming the next British prime minister. Tall, thin banners flapped in the breeze. “Britain Has Changed Its Mind,” read one. “Stop Brexit,” said another. A man in a lawn chair held a sign [...]

Expanding Her Portfolio

Through an internship with M. Shanken Communications, rising senior Teddy Willson has contributed to both Wine Spectator and V magazines. It took me sitting down to write this to fully realize that I’m already halfway through my summer internships. It’s so hard to believe, it almost doesn’t feel real—like you could pinch me and I’d realize it was all a dream. Maybe it’s because I’ve been so busy. Or maybe it’s because this summer really has felt like a dream come true to this journalist-in-the-making.    In June, I began digital [...]
