Tropical Audubon Society is a 501(c)(3) founded in 1947 that has come to be known as “South Florida’s Voice of Conservation.” We are guided by our Mission to “Conserve and restore South Florida’s ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats.” We facilitate our Mission via Conservation, Education and Preservation. These three pillars of our grassroots organization are supported by advocacy, outreach, events, fundraising and communications. The focus of this work primarily encompasses Miami-Dade County (MDC), where we are based. As a small NGO, we require staff to be flexible and adaptable to changing needs, and to collaborate with colleagues as a team to accomplish goals.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Membership & Communications Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Membership Program and assisting the Communications Director in managing content creation and distribution that connects people with South Florida’s birds and ecosystems, elevates Tropical Audubon Society’s community profile, and enhances our advocacy and outreach. These communications duties encompass social media, e-newsletters, media advisories, internal reporting and other as-needed messaging. Monitoring media coverage, attending organization events and helping produce multimedia projects will also be expected.
INTERNAL RELATIONS:
Reports to Communications Director Interactions: As a member of a small team, the Membership & Communications Assistant should have excellent working relationships with other team members and be able to work collaboratively.
EXTERNAL RELATIONS:
Serves as Tropical Audubon’s Membership contact and secondary Communications contact on an as-needed basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Membership & Gift Administration
- Provide administrative support for the Membership and Capital Campaign programs.
- Provide administrative support to track donations.
- Prepare and process donation acknowledgement tax letters.
- Post and report on Capital Campaign gifts, pledges and payments.
- Assist with pledge schedules, payments, pledge reminders, membership renewals, etc.
- Help prepare custom reports for print and/or online distribution.
Communications
- Help facilitate an active presence on social media platforms.
- Leverage social media and other calendaring platforms to promote TAS events.
- Assist in updating TAS’s website.
- Draft social media content per social media plan for review and revision.
- Assist with any communications operations-related tasks.
- Answer phone, retrieve and take messages.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications desirable, or currently working toward a degree in communications, environmental science, political science, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- On-site presence required.
- Active social media presence and/or experience running social media feeds.
- Excellent writing and communications skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, members and other community partners.
- Solutions-oriented self-starter.
- Working knowledge of Canva, Microsoft Word; familiarity with EveryAction desirable.
- Spanish language proficiency is desirable.
HOURS: Part-time Independent Contractor, 12-15 hours per week as needed; flexible hours
COMPENSATION: $15 to $18 per hour, to be aligned with qualifications and experience
