National Geographic Society is seeking an Inclusive Communications Intern to join our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team, which advises and collaborates across the organization with staff and Explorers to support the diversity, equity and inclusion throughline outlined in the Society’s strategic plan NG Next.

The Inclusive Communications Intern will help develop and implement strategies and tools to effectively and thoughtfully communicate to staff and Explorers how the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team is a resource for them, supports their work, and how we can work together to foster mutual respect and a sense of belonging in the workplace and within project teams around the world in service of the Society’s mission.

Three Principal Learning Responsibilities

  • Enhance skills in communicating to diverse groups of people and audiences, including National Geographic Society staff and Explorers. (45%)
  • Expand understanding of inclusive content creation best practices and how to apply them in the workplace and within project teams. (45%)
  • Continue to learn about concepts and skill sets important to creating an inclusive organizational culture through interactive learning opportunities. (10%)

Related Field of Study Required

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students in any major or field of study involving communications are welcome to apply. Students will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.Previous internship, work, or project experience focused on communications preferred but not required.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to inclusive practices (e.g., prior participation in convenings or workshops focused on creating environments where everyone benefits from opportunity, mutual respect and a sense of belonging)
  • Demonstrated interest in communicating in ways that consider as many audiences as possible (e.g., prior experience drafting newsletters, social media posts, etc. for diverse groups of people)
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Google Workplace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Work Designation

Our internships are US based. The 2025 program will be mostly remote. Students will be invited to our DC headquarters one week in June to attend one of our signature events.

Salary Information

The pay rates for this internship are as follows:

  • $18.55 (undergraduate)
  • $22.00 (graduate)
