University of Miami student publications were recently recognized with top awards at the College Media Association and Associated Collegiate Press Mega College Media Workshop in Washington D.C.
The 2018 Ibis yearbook picked up it 13th Pacemaker Award, while The Miami Hurricane and Distraction magazine were named as Pacemaker finalists. The Ibis was one of three college yearbook Pacemakers. The other two college yearbook Pacemakers were from Loyola Marymount University and Kansas State University. The 2018 Ibis was edited by Alize Ramirez-Canas.
“I am so proud of Alize’s staff continuing the tradition of being recognized nationally for all the outstanding work that they do to produce the Ibis yearbook. This is the top honor that the Ibis can receive from ACP which continues to put the yearbook in the top publications in the country,” said Randy Stano, Ibis editorial adviser and professor in the School of Communication.
Two Best of Show honors were brought home by UM publication staffers. The 2019 Ibis edited by Morgan Thomson was named Best of Show Yearbook or first place for books over 300 pages. The fall house/staff ad for Distraction magazine designed by Gabby Rosenbloom was named Best of Show or first place for Advertising Design. Best of Show honors are awarded to schools that are present at the national convention. In the Feature Magazine Best of Show category, the fall 2019 issue of Distraction finished in fourth place.
The Ibis picked up individual honors from ACP of first place in yearbook spread, Casey Lue; second place in informational graphics, Morgan Thomson; third place in illustration, Casey Lue; fourth place in yearbook covers, Casey Lue; and honorable mention in house advertisement, Morgan Thomson.
Distraction won individual ACP honors for second place in magazine spread, Teddy Willson; honorable mention in house advertisement, Gabby Rosenbloom; and fourth place in informational graphic, Etty Grossman.
The Miami Hurricane was one of 46 newspaper Pacemaker finalists. Nineteen college news publications were named Pacemakers. The Miami Hurricane was last named a Pacemaker in 2009.
Distraction magazine was one of 41 magazines named a Pacemaker finalist. Distraction was last named a Pacemaker two years ago.
In the CMA Pinnacle Awards, the Ibis was named first place for Best Yearbook News Page/Spread; third place for Best Infographic; third place for Best Ad Campaign; honorable Mention for Yearbook of the Year; and honorable mention for Best Editorial Illustration.
Distraction received CMA Pinnacle Awards for first place Best Magazine News Page/Spread; first place for Best Infographic; second place for Best Portrait; second place for Best Sports Feature Photo; and honorable mention for Best Magazine Contents/Spread.
The Miami Hurricane received a CMA Pinnacle Award of honorable mention in the Best Column category.
“UM student publications made the U look great at the national conference in Washington D.C.,” said Stano.
