The University of Miami’s student-run television station, UMTV, continues to shine on the national stage, earning three prestigious nominations in this year’s College Television Awards. Out of over 230 entries submitted by 50 colleges and universities nationwide, UMTV secured nominations for its flagship weekly live shows, SportsDesk and NewsVision, marking the sixth consecutive year both programs have been recognized in their respective categories.
“Being recognized among the country’s top three college TV news and sports shows for the sixth year in a row is a huge testament to the students, faculty, and staff at UM’s School of Communication,” said Boriana Treadwell, senior lecturer and advisor to NewsVision. “It shows that we are consistently producing outstanding work that industry professionals notice and celebrate.”
This year, SportsDesk achieved an extraordinary milestone by securing not just one but two nominations in the Sports category. With only three total nominations in the category nationwide, this accomplishment underscores the exceptional quality of content produced and cements the University of Miami’s place as a leader in collegiate sports broadcasting.
“I could not be prouder of my students and the effort they put into the show each and every week,” said Edward Julbe, senior lecturer of journalism and media management and advisor to SportsDesk. “This is a testament to their dedication and it’s always nice when they get the recognition they deserve.”
“We’re very proud of our students and our program overall,” added Ben Ezzy, manager of broadcast operations. “It takes a lot of time and effort to produce quality broadcasts, and it’s very rewarding to see their efforts recognized on a national stage.”
The College Television Awards, hosted annually by the Television Academy Foundation, recognize and reward excellence in student-produced programming across seven categories. Each entry is judged by Television Academy members, mirroring the rigorous Emmy Awards selection process.
UMTV hopes to replicate last year’s impressive achievement when SportsDesk and NewsVision both took home top honors. Winners of the 44th College Television Awards will be announced at a star-studded ceremony on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Television Academy’s North Hollywood campus.
