The Intercept is seeking to grow its reporting ranks by adding an aggressive and energetic reporter who will break political news that matters. We want someone focused on the consequences of politics and policy, not the horse race.
This journalist must have a high metabolism, an ability to land meaningful scoops, and the capacity to balance breaking news, explanatory step backs, and investigative projects. They will come up with original story ideas that differentiate The Intercept from other outlets and take on assignments from editors. Throughout their work, this reporter will prioritize the needs of the audiences they serve.
Ideally, the candidate would be based in Washington, D.C., but will consider remote applications.
Background + Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of journalism experience
- A track record of meaningful scoops
- Comfort with and interest in writing both fast-turn articles and longer investigative pieces
- Ability to file copy that’s clean, accurate, and provocative
- An independent perspective and a strong voice
- Ability to respond to shifting priorities and demands, based on organizational needs and the news cycle
- Ability to work well both on teams and independently, and receive constructive feedback
- Experience and sourcing in national politics
