Position Overview
Coconut Grove Spotlight is seeking a motivated and passionate News Writing Intern to join our team. This internship offers an excellent opportunity for aspiring journalists to gain hands-on experience in the world of local journalism. As a News Writing Intern, you will work closely with our editorial team to produce compelling, accurate, and timely news stories that matter to the Coconut Grove community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research and Reporting: Conduct thorough research on local events, issues, and people to inform your writing. Attend community meetings, events, and interviews as needed.
- Writing and Editing: Write clear, engaging, and informative news articles, feature stories, and profiles that align with the editorial standards of Coconut Grove Spotlight. Assist with editing and proofreading other content as assigned.
- Content Development: Contribute ideas for stories, series, and special features that resonate with our readership. Collaborate with photographers, videographers, and graphic designers to enhance stories with multimedia elements.
- Community Engagement: Engage with local residents and stakeholders to build relationships and gain insights for reporting. Represent Coconut Grove Spotlight at community events and forums.
- Social Media: Assist with promoting your work and the work of the Coconut Grove Spotlight on social media platforms. Craft social media posts that encourage readership and engagement.
- Administrative Support: Perform general administrative tasks related to newsroom operations, such as managing editorial calendars, organizing research files, and maintaining communication with sources.
Qualifications:
- Education: Current enrollment in a college or university program, preferably in journalism, communications, English, or a related field. Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply.
- Writing Skills: Strong writing with an eye for detail, accuracy, and clarity. Previous experience in news writing or content creation is a plus but not necessary.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable conducting interviews and engaging with diverse community members.
- Interest in Local Journalism: A strong interest in local news, community issues, and nonprofit journalism. Knowledge of Coconut Grove and the Miami area is a plus.
- Tech Savvy: Familiarity with social media platforms, and basic multimedia editing tools helpful.
- Self-Motivated: Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to take initiative and contribute creatively to the team.
- Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with a small, dedicated team. Open to feedback and eager to learn and grow as a journalist.
