The U.S. Army Cadet Command provides internship opportunities for communications, journalism, photojournalism, multi-media journalism, broadcast journalism, photography and social media majors at the ROTC Cadet Summer Training Public Affairs Office at Fort Knox, Ky., from May 12 to August 18, 2021. It is open to students who will be rising sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students. Deadline for applications is April 9, 2021.

The Cadet Command Public Affairs Internship Program is designed as a hands on, media work environment. Your students will produce news releases, stories, features, photos, digital and multimedia products in support of the training that is the foundation for ROTC Cadets to become officers in the Army. Their work will appear on our websites and social media platforms, and may be featured in local and regional outlets.  Interns must be able to juggle multiple assignments at a time.

Photojournalist applicants should have experience in news and feature writing, be able to write headlines and captions, and have a working knowledge of the AP Stylebook and copyediting. Photojournalists should be proficient in digital photography and know how to write captions.

Social media applicants should be familiar with varied social platforms and have experience dialoguing professionally on those sites. They also will be required to stream video of various activities through the Cadet Command website.

Broadcast journalism applicants should have experience in pre and post production of video products with working knowledge of Adobe Premier.  Interns will shoot, edit and produce each video, and should do so with minimal supervision. Interns should have experience with shooting video in a documentary style, non-linear editing and have a working knowledge of producing video for DVD quality and posting various platforms. Interns must be able to juggle multiple assignments.

Interns will be reimbursed for travel expenses to and from their home/university to Fort Knox.  Additionally they will be paid a $55 per day stipend to cover costs of meals and incidentals.  Housing is provided at no cost to the interns.  They will be living in two-person rooms in Army barracks near the training area. During field operations interns will cover events in a variety of weather conditions.

All applicants must have a driver’s license, and should be reasonably fit to withstand demanding physical requirements of covering the training. While your students will not be in the Army, we expect them to respect authority, to be drug-free during the summer, and to recognize the non-confrontational / investigative nature of their reporting.

Your students will gain valuable experience, be supervised by experienced cadre, and have the opportunity to interact with college students from across the nation who are training to become Army officers. To apply, students can send their packets to richard.t.patterson2.civ@mail.mil.  Packets will only be accepted electronically and should include a cover letter, resume, at least one letter of recommendation from a professor and examples of their work.  For more information on the program visit https://futurearmyofficers.army.mil/pao-internship.
