Students in the CIM department have produced short films in Guatemala, Spain, Prague and China, created exciting webisodes, maintained engaging blogs, created websites for social change and interactive environments all while learning from discussions with visiting guests from around the world.

"While at UM I made four short films. All of those were made with the School's equipment and with hands-on help from my professors. To actually have professors who care about you and know who you are sitting with you in an edit bay and helping you work out problems is an incredibly valuable and unique experience."

Class of 2005

Communication Studies

The Communication Studies Department empowers students to develop advanced skills in cross-cultural communication, leadership, argumentation, oral and written presentations, critical thinking, research, relationship building and more — skills that can be used in any field or career.

Communication Studies students also have the opportunity to conduct important research on a number of topics. Students are challenged to apply communication skills through hands-on experiential learning and professional internships.

Our outstanding professors prepare students for many different careers, including politics, public advocacy, healthcare promotion, business, intercultural education, or to pursue graduate or law school.

The program also specializes in the rapidly developing field of health communication through collaborative work with UM's medical school and other campus resources.

"The Communication Studies program at the School of Communication is amazing. The program helps you become an expert in any field you desire. In three short years, I have learned so much about research. Choosing Communication Studies as a major may seem somewhat ambiguous at first, but it is the best decision I have made. The classes give you the opportunity to practice researching and analyzing anything you're interested in and prepares you for what's to come in the real world regardless of what path you choose."

Journalism & Media Management

The Journalism and Media Management Department includes majors in Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Electronic Media and Media Management.

Journalism and Media Management faculty teach students to gather content, analyze information, and use technology to tell meaningful stories to global audiences, as well as to understand those audiences and think critically about demographic and usage trends important to today's media enterprises. While doing this work, students will find themselves using state of the art digital equipment and facilities and exploring cutting edge multimedia and social media practices. Graduates of this department can be found working for news and information operations such as CBS, Fox News, E! Entertainment Television, ESPN, Telemundo, The Washington Post and National Geographic.

"The hand-on experience I received in the Journalism program was invaluable. I had already produced, written, and anchored a newscast before graduation. Major newsrooms are filled with UM grads, from managers to producers, writers to reporters, and anchors. It's a real testament to the quality of a UM education."

Class of 1991

Strategic Communication

The Strategic Communication Department consists of Advertising and Public Relations, two programs that are continually evolving to meet the demands of the ever-changing media industry. Advertising students specialize in the area of the advertising business that best suits their skills and talents and may pursue a degree focusing on an advertising creative, advertising management, or general advertising track. Students in all three tracks learn how to create an effective, strategically sound advertising campaign for a real-world client through our exciting and contemporary curriculum.

Many UM advertising graduates are working in the most prestigious advertising agencies in the country, including Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Young & Rubicam, BBDO, Grey Advertising, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Saatchi & Saatchi, Mullen, and Arnold Worldwide.

Public Relations students learn how to promote a client's business, image, product, or service in the national and international marketplace through media releases, editorial content, and promotion. Courses also reflect the importance of research and multimedia technology in public relations for both the public and private sectors. Students have the opportunity to create and execute PR campaigns for real-world clients through course work.

"The School of Communication was a great place to learn how to succeed in the public relations field. The professors gave me insight and understanding about an industry I knew nothing about before I came to UM. The knowledge and experience I gained were invaluable and made my transition into the 'real world' exciting rather than intimidating."
