The Department of Journalism and Media Management empowers ethical, innovative, and socially engaged journalists, media professionals, and industry leaders. Through academic rigor, hands-on learning, community collaboration, and forward-thinking scholarship, we prepare students to lead and transform the media landscape.

We are proud to be recognized by the Broadcast Education Association as a top 10 program for Institutional Excellence in Media in 2025, alongside our #5 rankings for both the nation’s top sports program and top news program.

Our state-of-the-art broadcast center, home to two fully equipped digital television studios and control rooms, has trained many renowned television professionals. Students also benefit from the Equipment Room, stocked with cameras, mics, and essential journalism gear.

Engagement with student media organizations like UMTV, WVUM, The Miami Hurricane, Distraction Magazine, and Ibis Yearbook allows students to enhance their skillsets and build impressive portfolios.

Students gain international reporting experience through immersive fieldwork and collaborations with media outlets, enhancing their skills in investigative journalism and cross-cultural communication.

Graduates of the department can be found working for news and information operations such as NBCUniversal, ABC, CBS, Fox News, E! Entertainment Television, ESPN, Telemundo, The Washington Post, and National Geographic.

Journalism and Media Management faculty teach students to gather content, analyze information, and use technology to tell meaningful stories to global audiences, as well as to understand those audiences and think critically about demographic and usage trends important to today’s media enterprises.
