Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. Communication Bridge

Through a generous gift from alumnus Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., the University of Miami School of Communication has established the Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. Communication Bridge. This Program aims to provide students with transformational experiences that inspire empathy through supporting summer study abroad experiences.

This support is intended to cover documented expenses, such as travel costs and tuition fees, up to a maximum of $2,000 per student. Awards are contingent upon enrollment in one of the four programs listed below. Funded students will be expected to submit a reflection essay by August 15, 2026, considering the impact of their experiences in the summer program.

Requirements

Eligible student include undergraduate students majoring in the School of Communication and graduate students enrolled in the school’s academic programs.
Currently enrolled full-time and returning with at least one semester left.
Minimum 3.0 GPA
Final commitments will be contingent upon successful enrollment in one of the four faculty-led study abroad programs listed below.

Program Proposal (not to exceed 250 words): Student proposals should address how the proposed study abroad site offers a new and distinct educational opportunity, justifying the significance of the intended experience. The proposed summer host community must be distinct from students’ home communities.

The School of Communication will select 10-12 junior or senior undergraduate and/or graduate students who are interested in a unique and immersive experience that will contribute to their personal and professional development in the communications field.

Students will travel to New York City during Spring Break to view several popular industries and network with New York-based University of Miami alumni to further expand their future growth and career opportunities.

Students must be available from March 7-15 to travel to New York City.

Must be a Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student of the School of Communication
Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
