In 2020, Professors Paul Driscoll and Michel Dupagne updated their chapter about multichannel television services in the 17th edition of Communication Technology Update and Fundamentals, a popular textbook on new media trends. This chapter reviews the history of cable television and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) services, explains the basic technology behind these delivery systems, and discusses issues that could affect the multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) marketplace in the years to come, including consolidation, cord-cutting, and the introduction of virtual MVPD services. Figures and tables are included.
