Media and backlash movements: A Global and Holistic Research Perspective Since 2010, backlash movements with retrograde objectives have gained global traction, advocating for the reversal of rights and a return to prior social conditions often marked by nationalism, xenophobia, racism, and anti-democratic goals. This presentation explores the role of the news media in contextualizing such movements and fostering democratic stability. I will use the cases of Brazil and the US to highlight the importance of centering research in countries with a press that has long dealt with authoritarian or semi-authoritarian regimes. The project proposes a research agenda that integrates journalism studies, practice, and pedagogy to better understand how media can both challenge and enable backlash movements in diverse global contexts.
